Radar is a tiny bat with the common name “big brown bat,” which can be a little confusing! She came to Pacific Wildlife Care from a wildlife center in San Diego 10 years ago. She had broken her wing when she was learning to fly. Although it healed, she no longer has the range of motion she needs to fly. Now, she is an ambassador animal for PWC. During presentations, she hangs upside down or sideways for people to observe.

Nothing eats more night-flying insects than bats. Fish & Wildlife estimates that, across the U.S., bats consume more than 1,500 dump truck loads of insects every night from spring until fall. Big brown bats consume many types of beetles. One study done in California showed that simply playing the echolocation call of bats over an orchard reduced insect damage by half. Insects can hear their calls, and having live bats hunting reduces insect damage by 90%.

I have always been fascinated by bats and was super excited to meet Radar and paint her. She looked really soft, though I was not allowed to touch her. She seems to have a big personality for such a tiny bat, and I was honored to meet her.
