Phoebe and Rachel were rescued from the auction in Texas when they were both about 4 or 5 months old. It was obvious that one of them was very sick. She was struggling to breathe. A donor had named that donkey Phoebe. The other donkey, her companion, didn’t have a name yet—so she was given the named Rachel (her funky haircut reminded Ron of “Friends”).
At the hospital, both were diagnosed with the equine flu. Phoebe also had a bacterial pneumonia infection in both of her lungs. But against all odds Phoebe started responding to her IV medication. She started fighting back! Rachel was right by her side in the intensive care unit.
After a week, they came home. These girls are completely inseparable. They went through a scary experience together and are now best friends. They are so happy to be home and are doing really well. Whenever you see one, you see the other. Phoebe and Rachel are soaking up all the love from volunteers and staff members, and we are confident that they will both make a full emotional recovery. These two best friends have no doubt been through a lot—and they will live out the rest of their lives happy, healthy, safe, and TOGETHER.
